That’s How You Do It!...

How many people can make Spartacus look silly in the last K of a race? Gilbert is on freaking fire right now. I don’t think this is the last stage he is going to win in this Tour. For me the surprise of the day was Cadel Evans, really solid finish from him. Hopefully a sign of things to come, especially with the head start Contador is giving everyone. Go buy sone stuff from RealCyclist, I have bills to...

Bruyneel Phoning It In...

Bruyneel Phoning It In
by Big Ring Pseudo News Network Team Radioshack manager Johan Bruyneel has confirmed he no longer gives a shit. A man described (by himself) as the greatest DS ever today announced he is sending 4 team leaders to A Tour de France. As expected Levi Leipheimer who amazed the cycling world by participating in every stage of the Tour de Suisse was named first co-co-co-co-leader and will be looking to improve on his Top 20 finish from last year. In related news Aspen food cart Cache Cache announced in honor of Levi they are offering a limited edition Ham and Swiss featuring hand...

Have A Fit...

Have A Fit
As I approach my 23rd season of racing you would think I would have my position pretty much dialed right? Well over the years of switching bikes, shoes, pedals and what not a lot of things sort of “migrated” and were assumed rather than measured and tested. Along with my new personal philosophy of trying to optimize everything I began to think about my bike fit. Especially since I have a MTB again, I wanted to get my position consistent. When I heard that my pal Dave Harward from Plan Seven Endurance Coaching had become certified with BikeFit Systems I knew I had to...

Team Work...

A few of the lads went up to Hood River last week to mix it up with some new faces. Brian Cadman originally sent this out to the team email list but I felt like it was worth sharing here. A lot of people even long time racers just don’t get the concept that road racing is a team sport. Even if you don’t ride for a team this is an important concept because you will be competing against teams so understanding how they work is crucial if you want to compete with them. A lot of MTB guys come over and get super frustrated because they just don’t get it. If you want...

Looking California, Feeling Like a Poser...

Looking California, Feeling Like a Poser
The last few seasons I have raced as much as I could. I tested different formats and profiles, trying to find what suited me, and what I liked. Every ride was for “training” and assigned grave importance. Sometimes I rode by the numbers and data. Sometimes I rode by feeling, knowing what I needed – usually the opposite of what I wanted. Speeding through sport bike heaven on Mullholland Looking back, I know I enjoyed most of those rides. Maybe all of them – even in the rain and snow. But the undercurrent of seriousness I carried into each spin on the open road...

Are There Any Heros Left?...

I guess I need to weigh in on the latest Lance. I may sound like a bit of a hypocrite for saying this but leave him alone. My feeling on Lance is they had their chance to make this stick while he was still active. I do not believe in fairy tales and I am not naive enough to think he was clean, he knows it, the UCI damn sure new it, and now I guess everyone does. Here is the thing, is the world a better place because of Lance Armstrong or Jeff Novitsky? Jeff Novitsky has taken down, Marion Jones, Barry Bonds and I think some other fat ass baseball players that I don’t care...

Not Big Ring...

Wouter Weylandt 1984-2011 Hard to really put into words what I am feeling and thinking. As cyclist we never stop to think that each time we strap on a helmet it may be our last. In 1998 I had my own near death experience on a bike. A few seconds or a few centimeters difference and I would not be here writing this. Ever since that incident I have not been able to watch crash videos, even the funny ones where no one really gets hurt. I understand all to well how lucky they are, the flip side of what could have happened and I do not find amusement or enjoyment in it at all. I just...
