Every Tuesday night racers pay $8 for the privilege of getting funneled through a chicane at one end of the track and squeezing inside a concrete barrier at the other racing for nothing more than bragging rights. These are dentists, software developers, truck drivers--guys who couldn't do the job that actually pays the bills if they got injured.

On the one hand, I have sympathy for the guys who feel their occupation puts their health at risk. On the other, they're free to go get jobs as dentists, software developers, or truck drivers if they're uncomfortable with the risks of bike racing.

That said, I'm the last one who would ever call Cancellara out for being a pussy.

I feel your pain, however, two points just to be fair:
1. Road racing is not about crashes. That would be NASCAR. Road racers wear clothes made out of the same stuff as women's panties -- not designed for sliding along on asphalt. The number of crashes in this year's Tour after only two stages are an embarrassment to the sport.
2. A motorcycle spilled enough oil all over the road, enough to bring down half the peloton? I'm skeptical of this tale.

This truly was an unsafe condition, beyond what road bicyclists normally bargain for. Make it wet, cold, muddy, steep, cobble-y or any other way possible to make 'em suffer, but injuries are not what it is about.
