This seems like very bad and unsportsmanlike advice. If someone was to do that on a run up in front of the rest of the field I could see them getting their ass ran over. they would probably deserve it too.
If you dont see this as poor sportsmanship where do you draw the line? If 3 racers are going through some single track, you are behind me and my teammate is in front of me and I sit up to let a big gap go, and at the same time wont let you by what is that going to do? Its gonna piss you off!! Its the exact same thing on a run up.
Cross racing is so much more fun to race than road in part of the friendly, non douche bag competition that is involved. I hate to see such tactics be taught to beginners and have our sport turn into the uptight negative attitude race series like racing the oval at rmr.

I don’t see it as being non sportsmanlike. Using your singletrack example it happens all the time, that is racing. I am not saying to actively move in the way of anyone just that if they are gonna get past then they will have to earn it.

Where do you draw the line? At 6′7″ I am slower than pretty much everyone in the tight turny stuff (like Wheeler Farm) so does that mean I should let everyone past me before we get there? Hell no! That is why you see us sprinting before the singletrack, everyone knows what is going to happen.

There are sections on every course where someone is going to feel they are faster or slower. The challenge of cross is to maximize your strength and minimize your weaknesses. If I am racing with someone and I know I am a better runner then it is my responsibility to get in front of them before the run if I want an advantage, if I don’t then I have no right to be mad that they are slowing me down.

I was doing a General Tso’s chicken and got to much brake.

(Pat)control the race or it will be out of your control.

When do you want to shoulder your bike versus pushing it. Is it always better to shoulder it?

  7. Marty says:

Some great tips. Beign wide on a run-up is just part of racing.

thanks for the part about having the bike solid. At Nat’s last year the first time up the stairs someone pulled my bike off my back (with me going down the stairs backwards with it)costing me many positions.
